Teaching on NewEdu

Educational Publishing for the Internet Age
Welcome teachers and educators!
If you're already familiar with NewEdu, feel free to immediately:

Example Lessons
Check out this 9 page lesson with many one-of-a-kind reference images. Here's a 3 page lesson followed by an interactive quiz. Take the quiz and you'll notice that the author used our authoring tool to enable the quiz to automatically point students back to sections of the lesson where specific missed answers can be re-studied. Here's a lesson with a quick downloadable video that wonderfully clarifies the author's text and photos. This is just a sampling of what instructors can create with the powerful authoring, publishing, and teaching environment we're building.

Detailed Introduction
If you need additional information on NewEdu's philosophy, motives, and tools for Teachers and Educational Publishers, please read through the topics below.

Introduction

There are over 4 million full-time teachers and professors, and well over 1 million retired teachers, coaches and part-time instructors in the US alone. By number, the teaching profession is one of the top 5 professional occupations in our country.

The combined intellectual property contained in the minds of these professionals adds up to over 60 million person-years of wisdom.

There are also several hundred major educational media publishers and tens of thousands of independent educational media producers doing business in the US today.

What would happen if a new kind of online publishing and virtual learning system enabled the most committed, passionate teachers and educational media publishers to:

  • Self publish their own specific ways of teaching every aspect of the subjects and topics they hold most dear;
  • Blend mixed media (text, video, audio, and attached documents) and virtual tutoring services in a way that simply couldn't exist in any medium before the advent of the Internet;
  • Allow the best of all their perspectives, ideas, products and services (from major producers, small niche publishers, and independent authors alike) to be presented together, regardless of price (free or paid, inexpensive or extravagant) in an environment designed to help students find the best teachers and materials for every aspect of every topic they need or want to master?

At NewEdu, we're passionate about channeling the wisdom and experience of the professional education community through better more efficient distribution and teaching tools. We're building the system described above, and we think it will have deep and lasting positive impact on the way millions of people around the world teach and learn.

One Tool, Endless Possibilities

NewEdu's beta system is just a small step toward realizing the ultimate vision we are pursuing, but nonetheless, it currently provides a comprehensive set of self-publishing solutions for educational content creators.

The heart of NewEdu's current technology is an online Authoring System that enables teachers and other creators of educational media products to:

  • Create and sell (or share for free) new HTML lessons complete with images, multimedia files, and contextually integrated multiple choice quizzes.
  • Publish and sell (or share for free) pre-existing lessons, workbooks, presentations, audio and video lectures, documentaries, software applications, and more.

You can learn more about how to use this authoring and publishing system below.

What is "Parallel Slant"?

By slant we mean, "presentation so as to conform to a particular bias or appeal to a certain audience." NewEdu's patent-pending marketplace technology enables many teachers and creators to offer their unique perspectives on every aspect of a subject in parallel, so that, every audience can, in the ultimate case, find a teacher or mentor whose bias/approach to a topic appeals highly to their personal needs as a learner.
  • For students, this means fast, easy access to choice of instructional slant, mode and learning materials.
  • For teachers, this means convenient access to alternative ways of conveying a topic in the class room or new ways to provide differentiated learning materials to specific students.
  • For authors and publishers this means a marketplace where you can sell extremely specific products to the audiences who need them the most.

As NewEdu grows and the amount of choice for each topic increases, we'll be offering sophisticated rating, reviewing, and personalization tools to help students make those choices in the most accurate and convenient way.

How NewEdu is Organized

Content on NewEdu is organized into three key layers:
  • Subjects: Groups of Chapters
  • Chapters: Groups of KnowledgeTargets™
  • KnowledgeTargets™: key aspects of any topic that a student must master to gain proficiency.

For example, Mathematics might be divided into smaller subjects including Algebra. Algebra can be broken down into 10 or 20 Chapters. These Chapters can each be broken down into 10 to 15 KnowledgeTargets™.

Authors and Publishers can list their lesson and product offerings at the Subject level under specific headings provided by NewEdu, and at the KnowledgeTarget™ level.

NewEdu will soon include two additional organizational layers:

  • Stranding: the interleaving of KnowledgeTargets™ in a particular order that is different from the default NewEdu presentation order.
  • Courses: Custom stranding by specific instructors.

Further enhancements will enable inter-disciplinary stranding and ultimately, completely unique stranding whereby custom KnowledgeTargets™ can be added (and existing KnowledgeTargets™ deleted) to accommodate the requirements of specific States, districts, schools, instructors, or even specific students.

Adding New Subjects and KnowledgeTargets™

You can suggest new Subjects or KnowledgeTargets™ at any time simply by sending a request via our feedback system.

In your request for new subjects and topics, please tell us:

  • The specific title of the Subject you would like to add;
  • The specific KnowledgeTargets™ you need to support the materials you wish to add;
  • A bit of information about yourself, your interests, and any credentials you have as an Educator or Publisher;
  • And finally, (very important!) why you think the suggested Subject and/or Topic(s) are important to the overall thoroughness of NewEdu's coverage.

Our staff will review your request and notify you by email once the Subject or KnowledgeTargets™ are available for your use.

Soon, NewEdu will enable you to participate in the addition of Subjects and KnowledgeTargets™ in a more elegant, direct fashion.

Adding New Lessons and Product Listings

If you can use a web browser, you can publish on NewEdu today! Use of our online authoring and listing tools is fast and easy. Adding new lessons or educational media products for any existing KnowledgeTarget™ is a quick four step process:
  1. Click on any subject on the homepage and navigate to the KnowledgeTarget™ level (the last level of each Subject).
  2. Click on the green "ADD A LESSON NOW!" button in the center of the page.
  3. Unless you are already logged in, you will be asked to log in or sign up.
  4. You will find yourself in the NewEdu Authoring System.

With the NewEdu Authoring System you can create and instantly publish comprehensive multimedia lessons with fully integrated interactive quizzes, images, downloadable audio or video, and attached documents such as PowerPoint or Word files.

Our modular authoring and publishing system makes it easy to choose the best possible layout for your materials.

Lessons on NewEdu are comprised of four components:

  • Introductions which include:
    • Title
    • Abstract
    • Price (free or sell for the amount of your choice, sharing revenue with NewEdu);
  • Pages containing any number of Sections;
  • Sections containing any number of smaller modular Blocks;
  • Blocks which can be assembled in any order and can contain
    • Text (regular, centered, or indented)
    • Bulleted Lists
    • Images with captions
    • Downloadable media files with captions (see below)
    • Interactive quiz questions

A lesson or product listing can contain any number of pages, sections, or blocks.

Text within lessons and product listings can contain links to:

  • Other websites
  • Other lessons on NewEdu

Sections and Blocks can be inserted or deleted at any point during the editing process. You can Save or Preview your work as you go, and Lesson Drafts are automatically saved to your MyEdu area.

Quiz Questions are inserted by the author within each Section in a Lesson. These questions, although entered within the Section they refer to, will be displayed together as a Quiz at the end of the Lesson. On the Quiz Results page, students can follow links from the questions they answered incorrectly to directly review the sections of the lesson that the questions pertain to.

In upcoming releases of NewEdu, you will be able to embed Quick Quizzes within the Lesson itself. We will also be making it possible to reorder Sections and Blocks. We will be adding many new kinds of Blocks, which will allow for even more sophisticated lesson layouts.

All lessons and submissions are reviewed prior to publishing by a member of our staff. Once created, you can edit your lessons or submissions at any time.

Supported Media Types

NewEdu currently supports the following file formats:
  • Text Formats
    Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (xls), Microsoft PowerPoint slideshows (ppt), PDF documents (pdf)
  • Image Formats
    JPEG images (jpg), GIF images (gif), PNG images (png)
  • Audio Formats
    MP3 audio clips or songs (mp3)
  • Video Formats
    Windows Media Player movies (wmv), QuickTime movies (mov)

We will be adding more formats in the coming months. If you need to use a format that we don't support, please let us know.

Publishing Standalone Audio, Video, PDFs, and More

It's easy to offer non-HTML products within our system.

NewEdu's goal is to ensure that all content connected to a particular KnowledgeTarget™ is very specific and highly relevant. You may need to create smaller segments of your material to ensure that it's as relevant as possible to individual KnowledgeTargets™.

For the convenience of your customers, we recommend that you keep uploaded files below 30MB in size. Our system currently has a 200MB file size limit. We impose this limit to encourage producers to provide products that are easy to download over DSL (or slower) connections. For larger files, just divide your program material into smaller segments/chapters.

To add a stand-alone product at the KnowledgeTarget™ level:

  • Navigate to the KnowledgeTarget™ where you wish to list your product.
  • Click the "ADD A LESSON NOW!" button on the next page.
  • Use the authoring environment to introduce your product with a title, abstract, and, if video, a few screen shots.
  • If necessary, divide your product into Chapters and upload them as multiple Blocks within the same Section of the lesson.

To add a stand-alone product at the Subject level:

  • Click on the Subject's link in the directory. Find one of the links that says, for instance, "Add subject-specific Video or Audio products here."
  • Click the "ADD A LESSON NOW!" button on the next page
  • Use the authoring environment to introduce your product with a title, abstract, and, if possible, a few screen shots.
  • If necessary, divide your media product into Chapters and upload them as multiple Blocks within the same Section of the lesson.
  • You may cross promote your products by cross linking between highly relevant complete versions listed at the Subject level and clips listed at the KnowledgeTarget™ level.

In the near future, NewEdu will feature a more streamlined and elegant way to list specific types of non-lesson virtual educational products (videos, audio lectures, software applications, audio-books, etc.).

Linking to and From NewEdu

If you have your own website or blog, you can link to any materials offered on NewEdu directly.

You can also link to your Profile Page in your MyEdu area, where all your lessons and products will be displayed in a single convenient list.

You can also send students and teachers links to these pages via email.

Adding Classic Texts

If you want to include classic texts for a subject at the Subject or KnowledgeTarget™ level, feel free to do so as long as you are certain the copyright is clear or owned by you.

You may offer these contributions for free or for any fee you desire as long as you have obtained proper clearance. The burden is on YOU (the listing party) to provide proof of origin and copyright.

Schools, Universities and Publishers Welcome

We encourage representatives of Schools and Universities to list authorized educational materials on NewEdu as a means to:
  • Help students in need;
  • Test the efficacy of the materials;
  • Market the capabilities of the source school or depeartment (we allow inclusion of links from listed materials to the web-site of the source Institution);
  • Generate revenue for the school at large or a specific department or club within the school.

Publishers are welcome and encouraged to list copyrighted sections of their own textbooks, reference materials, videos, and audio programs, as long as they correspond closely to specific Subjects or KnowledgeTargets™.

Publishers can currently:

  • Sell these materials for any price;
  • Give KnowledgeTarget™ specific segments of these materials away and embed links in the listings to the complete versions of your eBooks, AudioBooks, videos, PDFs, etc. for sale in the sections at the top level of each NewEdu Subject.
  • Sell complete or segmented virtual products on NewEdu and link from segments listed within NewEdu to complete printed (physical) Books, DVDs, CDs, Audio Tapes, etc., for sale at other online eTailing sites (NewEdu does not handle physical fulfillment of any kind).

NewEdu is developing programs to help publishers with large libraries of relevant materials to leverage NewEdu as a channel. Please contact us for more details.

Subject Editors

NewEdu staff members approve all listings that appear within the system. We will soon be recruiting full-time and part-time Subject Editors for various core academic subjects.

If you have a passion for guiding the evolution of a subject on NewEdu, please let us know. Include in your request the following key items:

  • The name of the subject you wish to lead
  • Your resume or CV
  • The number of hours per week you could devote to this job

Pricing and Revenue Sharing

NewEdu is a fully operational online marketplace that uniquely enables the mixing of free and fee-based virtual materials.

When you list lessons or educational media products on NewEdu, you can give them away or charge a price of your choice.

As a hybrid publisher/retailer, we split post-transaction fee revenue generated by the sale of virtual products 50/50 with the listing party. For existing publishers, this corresponds to standard retailer discounts. For self-publishers, this corresponds to earning a 50% royalty from the first sale. Read our Seller's Terms and Conditions to learn more.

Copyright

All materials listed and offered for sale or for free on NewEdu are the property of the listing entity. See our Terms of Service for NewEdu Sellers for details.

NewEdu strictly forbids the listing of plagiarized or stolen or copied materials.

We will cooperate with legitimate owners of materials or law enforcement agencies to remove plagiarized or stolen materials from our system immediately and prosecute any offenders to the fullest extent of the law.

If you believe specific content on NewEdu is of suspect origin, please notify us. Make sure you include as much detail as possible about your claim, including a link to the specific content in question.
